Stanmore Student Accommodation/HMO Event

A partnership between Stanmore combined and the three residents associations which cover the Stanmore area are working to organise a public meeting on Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and student accommodation. The meeting’s aim is to determine what might be done to stem the increase of student properties and the issues that are generally associated with a high student population.

The event is planned to be held at Winchester Family Church, Stanmore Lane on Thursday 19th November. Doors will open at 6:30PM to register and the meeting will start at 7PM.

Mike Gardner, the Stanmore Combined chairman, said “The University is a great asset to our city of Winchester, but the pressure it places on this local community by way of housing, parking and other issues needs to be understood and controlled if we are to live, work and celebrate community together. This meeting gives us all chance to start on this task."

The event will include presentations by Tommy Geddes, Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Winchester and Rebecca Goulding Winchester City Council’s Anti-social Behaviour Coordinator & PC Emma Port from the Safer Neighbourhoods Team. Representatives from other organisations such as Winchester City Council, Police, Student Union & Local Landlords etc have also been invited to attend. The invitation is also extended to the student population in Stanmore so that their views are included in the discussions that follow.

Upon conclusion of the presentations and after a short refreshment break, attendees at the event will break into smaller groups to discuss some of the issues that emerged from the recent Community Plan consultation. These could include loss of family housing due to student lets, parking and other topics of concern, such as anti-social behaviour, noise nuisance, unkempt gardens and litter etc.

If you are concerned by any of these issues, then why not come along to the meeting to share your views and help find a solution.
